Mark Weingard is the founder of Iniala, the Inspirasia Foundation and Genesis Malta. Completely self-made, Weingard was an only child growing up in Manchester, England who first achieved success as a young professional trading Interest rate swaps. He then went on to set up Reset, the world’s leading Online trading system for Floating rate agreements, helping banks offset risk from their portfolios. He sold Reset to ICAP in 2008.
Mark’s incredible journey through life included many near successes and failures and ups and downs but the loss of his fiancée Annika Linden in the 2002 terrorist attack in Bali made Mark understand what he wanted to do with his life. He created the Annika Linden Foundation, which focused on helping the disadvantaged. Its work grew: projects have spanned education, health and rehabilitation. With Mark keen to expand the foundation’s remit further, he changed its name in 2012 to ‘Inspirasia’. This foundation is an integral part to the creation of Iniala, and is the organisation to which 5% of all revenue (not profit) is donated from stays at Iniala, plus revenues from many of his other businesses.
Iniala was built on the site of Mark’s former house in Phang Nga, which was damaged in the Boxing Day tsunami. Needless to say, Mark was there when the tsunami hit on December 26, 2004. Eleven people died that day on Natai Beach but luckily none of Mark’s party, which consisted of 17 friends and their children celebrating Christmas. The group took shelter on the roof of the house while the wave destroyed Natai Beach. Months later, Mark was planning the rebuild of the house when he got the idea to hire world-class designers and expand the structure. There the Iniala dream was born.
Mark believes having survived multiple catastrophic events and having had a successful entrepreneurial career he must make a difference. One can expect many exciting projects from him in the future. He currently has several regeneration projects in Valletta, the capital city of Malta as well as being involved in larger residential and office projects on the island. He and his Iniala team are creating Malta’s first super luxury boutique hotel overlooking the Grand Harbour. He is also firmly committed to the improving the cultural life in Malta and is involved in several projects including Gastronomy festivals and Art galleries within Malta. Mark and his Inspirasia team are also cofounders of the Malta Social Impact awards, a new venture that brings together philanthropists and NGOs together on the island and promotes new social projects.
